The parks
Magnolia Park — a splash pad for the little ones and basketball and tennis courts for everyone older. The easiest choice when your children are at different stages.
Butternut Creek Park — a sprayground and, more usefully, a picnic shelter. This is the park for the visit that turns into lunch.
Hidden Creek Park East — a sprayground with geysers, multi-sport fields, and restrooms on site. The practical choice when the afternoon needs to last.
Walnut Street Park — a splash pad the children switch on themselves, which changes everything for a child who is wary of water.
Orenco Woods Nature Park — a stream, sand and log climbers instead of moulded plastic. Bring a change of clothes and expect to stay longer than you planned.
Reedville Creek Park — nearly ten acres, a playground, a shelter and its own parking. The default when nobody has decided anything.
Shute Park — Hillsboro’s oldest park, with an aquatic centre and a library branch on the same site. The one to pick when the weather cannot be trusted.
One thing worth knowing
Water features across Hillsboro are seasonal and their hours vary. It is worth checking before you build an afternoon around one — a splash pad that is switched off is a much easier conversation in the kitchen than in the car park.
